GENERAL WRANT

Preposthumosity

Independents being as they are un-affiliated, tend to be difficult to quantify. I do know that in the WARD where Lady Phyllis and I vote ( She is as you will recognise but the wife of a mere Knight of the Realm, so is entitled to vote; whereas a Baroness in her own right, nor what was once termed a lunatic, isn’t.) Our Independent Candidate , now a Councillor came top of the Poll. I find this very gratifying after all the effort put into our Conference at Bognor Regis last autumn. The overall good results have caused me to modify my viewpoint that disqualification, might apply to many persons beyond Peers of the Realm Certified Lunatics, and American or other aliens in residence. Well done Maam.

As I write this I am necessarily seated beside my telephone awaiting a recall to the Colours, albeit in an advisory capacity to Downing Street. I have to tell you that no summons has been received from our new Prime Minister so a state of war must persist between us.

Although I lived my life by the sword, albeit the sword of justice, I have never been keen on this Iraq business. If they need a Police Force there, it is up to their Government to recruit one. It is not the job of the British Army to stand as an Aunt Sally in lieu . We Veterans of Palestine and the North West Frontier have seen it all before and have no wish to see our children’s
Generation sacrificed in the defence of one knows not what. Are there no Iraqi’s or Afghanis in this country willing to go to the rescue of their mother country?

We have seen this business in America at their World Trade Centre, have been made aware of Bomb Threats on the Streets of London, and at Glasgow Aerodrome.
Reputable such things are done in the name of Allah. I do not know about that. Terrorist threats are one thing, but the question one needs to ask is how we as a Sovereign Nation acquired these Terrorists, or their parents in the first place? May their God Bless every Nationality, but if any do not care for the British way of life, go where things may be more to your liking. As a Nation we are far too soft, too Politically Correct; are unwilling to stand up to be counted. This has been our undoing. If we are unable to pass school exams, or are unable to gain admittance to Universities, or the Police Force etc. or even last the full course to become a Doctor, then no bother, just lower the standard.

One reads in the Paper this Sunday morning July 1st. That a covey of Bishops claim that both the Floods and our metaphorical ‘Plague of Toads’ are some sort of Heavenly Judgement on the Decadence of the World, the which has promoted the lack of respect for the planet. I can not doubt that it is the Churches’ lack of leadership that is to be blamed for much trouble. It is an error to try to shift the blame back to God, as though they had been doing fine until they were landed with this judgement out of the blue. The Church of England’s membership is in freefall. Everyone likes old Church Architecture, hymn singing, and a good show at a wedding or funeral, but where has the Church’s Moral Leadership been in these times of strife. Even the late Pope whom some would sanctify apologised for the Crusades.

Lady Phyllis, and to a lesser extent my good self try to set a fine example of moral rectitude. One likes to think it rubs off on others; even so we make no claim that the recent successive elevations of our Village’s Rectors to fill Bishoprics and perform the Offices of Deans of both Canterbury and Exeter is in any way due to us. None the less, …well enough said maybe, really can’t go into all that.

Is the law all it should be? Why does it have to be the Media that highlights its deficiencies. Too many wrong convictions have to be overturned. What of Evans in the Rillington Place murders? The man Evans is dead for all of that. If once alleged terrorists have to be released from prison after many years internment, surely those who gave or laid false evidence should be castigated.

What of the Magistrates. There is this business in Manchester where a lady appeared in court wearing an overall garment and did so in the name of her Islamic Faith. I applaud the Magistrate who refused to hear the case, the more so if as one is advised there is no requirement in Islam for such a garment to be worn.

What of the Shopkeeper in Devon convicted of assaulting a couple of shop lifters who allegedly kicked him in the ‘bollocks’? Whose side are the Magistrates on? Surely having pleaded guilty the shopkeeper would better have been given a conditional discharge.Especially as he had only so pleaded to avoid ‘per misadventure’ the possibility of being sent to prison for six months.

Those whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Then of course Cyril Connolly re phrased Euripides
As

'Whom the Gods wish to destroy they first call promising'

General Wrant retd.
